KABIR M. YARI (PROFILE)>>

Kabir M. Yari was born in Daura, Katsina State, Nigeria. He is a professional and registered Town Planner with extensive experience in urban infrastructure projects, participatory planning and urban governance. He started his working career with the federal ministry of works and housing before joining the urban development bank of Nigeria.

Kabir holds a Bachelor degree in Geography from the Bayero University, Kano and a Master’s degree in Urban and regional Planning from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. In addition, He attended many short courses in housing, project preparation and appraisal, public, private partnerships and urban and city management among others.

EXPERIENCE>>

Kabir Yari has extensive experience in the preparation and implementation of urban development projects. He has worked or closely collaborated with multi lateral institutions and agencies such as The World Bank, United Nations Human Settlements Programme, (UN-HABITAT) and the Cities Alliances among others in the preparation of urban projects and programmes. For example, he participated in several projects aimed at improving participatory Urban Management Programme (UMP) between 1996 and 2000 as well as the sustainable cities programme in the cities of Ibadan, Enugu and Kano.

Kabir Yari also participated actively in the preparation and participation of Karu Development Strategy in Nigeria, supported by the World Cities Alliances, the World Bank and UN-HABITAT. He also has extensive experience in the financing of urban projects having spent a substantial part of his working career with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and Urban Development Bank of Nigeria.

Before becoming the National President, Mallam Yari, as he is fondly called, has diligently served in the Nigeria Institute of Town Planners in many capacities. First, as Asst. National Secretary (1988-90), National Secretary (90-92), Chairman, FCT Chapter, (2005-2007), Second National Vice President and then as First National Vice President.

Mallam Yari has come on board with the hope of seeing Urban Planning play a role in improving the living conditions of Nigerians. He hopes to work with all stakeholders to make human settlements in Nigeria more competitive and to provide better living environment for their residents.
Mallam Yari is happily married with children. His hobbies include traveling, reading and community development.
